If you are into the arts then Glasgow has a lot to offer. There is a new generation of artists burning bright in terms of talent. So much so that it can be easy to forget some of those who have gone before them and in their time flew the Scottish flag in the world of art.
If however you want to go back in time then the Scottish Art gallery at Kelvin grove is a good place to start your tour. Names such as John Slavery, George Henry, E.A. Home and E.A. Walton all have their work displayed in the gallery. The Glasgow boys as they were known as were productive around the same time as the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh and they helped revolutionise Scottish painting between 1880 and about 1895. It was a young rebellious phase in their work. They were rebelling against traditional Victorian sentimentality. The period only lasted the fifteen years and was characterized by their choice of tackling every day subjects in a fresh innovative ways. Many of them later became traditional Society painters.
One of the important paintings displayed at the gallery is 'The 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition' by John Lavery and 'The Druids – bringing the mistletoe' by Henry and Home.
If you are staying at a central Glasgow hotel then, A little later than the ‘Glasgow Boys’, a group of painters comprising JD Fergusson, SJ Peploe, FCB Cadell and Leslie Hunter became known as the Scottish Colourists. Their work is definitely worth seeing. Their style was vigorous, vibrant and bold and will brighten any room in a house if you are lucky enough to be able to afford one.
If you are staying in any Luxury hotel Glasgow has to offer the staff there might be able to advise you on other exhibitions around the city.
